It’s hard to look at this election and not feel a bit unhappy.
I suppose that’s how most people are feeling, but in particular because of my technical background I just see shitty work done everywhere. I served as the GOP Data Director for the 2014 cycle. At that time I tried to implement a good data operation. I can vividly remember the Friday before the election 2014 and Jason Thielman, Daines’ Chief of Staff yelling at us since we had shut the phones down early.
“The election is 4 days away! How can you possibly tell us to quit?”
“Well sir, we’ve actually contacted so many people that we think calling them more will piss them off and make them vote for Curtis!”
“This is crazy.”
It was around this time the campaign did something wacky. It paid $7,000 for a list of a thousand or so email addresses to send campaign emails to. Our vendor actually told us not to do this because in their opinion it was a poor investment since most solicitation emails are just caught by spam filters, almost no one would even see the emails. They still did it. Great use of campaign funds.
This year Thielman et al poured another $100,000 into getting the Greens on the ballot AGAIN, despite the fact that every judge in this state is owned by the Dems and would immediately find some bullshit way to get them removed. I get why they did this in ‘14. They were coming off 2012 when they KNEW for sure Denny was going to win. The election of just 2 years prior was stinging them. They NEEDED to win to keep themselves employed. So they made financially risky decisions with little to no benefit in the HOPE it would help get even one vote. Can’t fault them for trying.
Why does this matter. The same reason government transparency matters. Because anytime someone is spending someone else’s money, isn’t there an obligation to make sure it’s spent WELL?
We returned our ballots the very first day. Yet I’ve still got about another 50 pieces of mail long past when it was public knowledge I’d returned my ballot. Is that a good investment of people’s money? Those poor Californians funding our campaigns. ☹
The other reason this election is painful is I actually have a really good bedrock knowledge of polling, and have to watch garbage poll after garbage poll get put into the public consciousness. I actually emailed the pollster at MSU asking for more information and was rebuffed and told I don’t know what I’m talking about… even though I graduated from there…
Here’s how polls should work in theory. You poll a certain number of people that is needed to get a representative sample and see your results. Do this a few times and the average of what you get should get you approximately to the true result.
However, this runs into problems in practice. See, liberals LOVE to tell everyone their views. All the time. They will even lie to you to tell you their views. They seem to have no scruples about dishonesty to buy even one more vote, which probably says something about some people’s character.
It’s why you see fake letters in the newspaper saying “I’m Joe Republican but it’s high time to crossover and vote for the Dems!” And then you just search his name and find the other 20 letters he wrote saying how evil Republicans are.
This is a known issue in polling. All of our commissioned polls in 2014 came with voter IDs attached. You would be astounded at the number of Democrats, including high profile people like Missoula City Council members and labor leaders, who say they are independents and Republicans who are voting Democrat! They think it helps to show dumb Republicans they can vote for Democrats, and maybe it does. Who knows. My problem was the lying. And to any pollster worth their salt people lying to you is bad and fucks your results.
There are other known issues. Statistically speaking, a Democrat is five times more likely to talk to a pollster than a Republican. And WHEN you do get a Republican, can you be sure they are representative of Republicans in general, and not just the pissed off ones? If you don’t account for this, it can seriously skew the results of your poll. Otherwise, you are going to be constantly surprised by Republicans outperforming your polls.
Next, we introduce raking. Raking is a concept of rebalancing the results you get from a poll to make it more representative of the population. So for instance, almost all pollsters get way too many liberals begging to answer and way too few Republicans. So they then “rebalance” the results so they better match what you know the population to be. For example, you’d recalculate the results with the Democrats responses diminished and Republican responses inflated.
(There is also issues of reliability when using exclusively online polls, and also using a live person vs a computer to do polls. Online polls miss tons of older voters and when you constantly bash Republicans and get people fired from their jobs for expressing right wing opinions, oddly enough people won't be truthful about voting for Republicans! Crazy, huh?)
However, any mathematical or statistical parameter or measure always has pros and cons. If you take an average, for instance, you need to make sure there are no outliers in your data or the average will be skewed. Median, mode, standard deviation blah blah blah. My point is to be precise and make sure what you’re doing is sound, you need to be aware of and make allowances for the weaknesses of the tools you’re using. And when you won’t share your data or methods, it’s pretty suspect whether you did or not.
In 2016 I put $100 on Trump winning the election at 5:1 odds. I made $500 off that bet. I have a couple of side bets going on also with this one. Here’s the Predictit market for the Electoral College.
The highest money is on the landslides. Republicans believe that Trump will win by 30-149 Electoral College votes, and Democrats believe Biden will win by 100-280+. They can’t both be right. Almost every poll shows this race pretty close, yet nobody is putting money on the close race. This is where you make the money, in the grey area between the guess and the truth.
Why is nobody at all certain how this going to go? Isn’t it a failure of our media and institutions that they have NO CLUE what the opinions of average people are? Isn’t it a failure of academia and our leaders to have the tools in their hands to do better but not act? I’m just astounded that people who would rather move to another country than see the “evil” candidate win have no interest in learning even the basics of how this stuff works.
I don’t know how close the race is. Going into 2014 we knew we’d have about 9-14 point lead on Amanda Curtis, and it ended up being +20.
I think Bullock is playing perfectly so far in that he’s adopting all the tactics he needs to do the best in this race. He's responded to the attacks as they came.
I also think Daines’ is doing quite well. I remember in May of 2014 we met in his home, baffled by the fact that the national Dems hadn’t committed a dime to helping Walsh win. We were just holding our breath waiting for the shoe to drop, which it never did since no polling ever showed him close. I can clearly and succinctly remember in my head Daines sitting in his living room couch and saying, “I’m ready to punch this guy right in the face if we need to.” Give credit to Daines he’s not played the Gianforte role and ignored the attacks, he’s definitely gone offensive in quite a few areas.
I’ve been voting for 20 years now. The secretly winning Democrat story is almost routine at this point. The gap in sampling Republicans ends up making Democrats think their candidates have chances in places they surely don’t. I’ve heard for 20 years straight now that Texas is going Blue and FINALLY Dems have brought in enough minorities to beat Republicans forever. It still hasn’t happened, and I think odds are it won’t happen this time either. But let them keep pouring money into unwinnable races, it sure keeps Democrat operatives employed! (Could this be the left-wing equivalent of sending money to prosperity preachers?)
Voters still care though. They are still starving to hear about the issues that matter to them while the two parties just talk exclusively to their bases and fight so rabidly the average voter wonders whether they care more about them or winning.
Why can Bullock win? He’s won before. The press has fawned over him for 12 straight years now, even claiming him to be scandal free because they refuse to cover any of his scandals. He has more than enough money to win. I don’t know why you’d sit on $30 million until 70% of people have voted, but *shrug* I’m not his campaign manager. He certainly has all the tools to pull it out. If he wins I'll be sad but I'll get why.
On the other hand, the last time voters picked a President they also gave 3 statewide Democrats their walking papers. Bullock’s insistence on sucking up all the air in his party and picking it’s candidates and policies in backrooms might lose him some votes and certainly weakens his party’s image. I think Daines has run perhaps the best Republican statewide campaign in recent memory. He has plenty of allies pouring money into the state. Voters are learning about their Governor some things they might be a little upset to know since the media has conveniently never let them know. A voter scorned is an awful thing to put into the electorate. Montanans also seem to be wary of giving either party complete power.
As I told a friend, I’ve made peace with either outcome. The election will certainly have consequences, but larger picture, I think Democrats have overplayed their hand. They followed up the corrupt old white lady with family baggage with the corrupt old white man with family baggage, yet want a different result.
Generally, voters want to hear things are getting better and Biden’s public embrace of packing the courts, shutting the country down and predicting a dark, dark winter probably doesn’t play well with Joe Independent. Telling people he will shut down all fossil fuels CAN NOT shore up his union base, especially the ones he needed to call back home from Trump. While minority turnout is high, Trump is doing better than 4 years ago with Blacks and Hispanics. Could Dems strategy of turning out minorities backfire? And honestly, the contrast between the enthusiasm of Trump and the frailty, anger and gloom of the left is pretty stark in even the most low information voter’s mind. Philadelphians are looting and starting fires again? Great timing.
Maybe I will just spend the next 7 days ignoring all news so I can be surprised either way.
My greatest sadness is seeing the institutions that define the West and exist primarily to keep an eye on government completely devolve into the new religious fundamentalism of social justice. You can't even get hired at a newspaper anymore without K-12 plus minimum 4 additional years of brainwashing from accountable government mommies, so the decline is really of their own doing. Unless you believe all this stuff or are pressured to comply, nobody is PAYING for this shit when it flows for free from every orifice of media, academia, law etc. Bullshit no one wants you mention? Let's check Lee Newspapers subscriber numbers for the past 20 years... (Sunday circulation 1999-2019 per Lee 10-Ks)
Here's Gwen, Keila and Sherry's greatest accomplishment. #GoWokeGoBroke as they say.
20 years ago 55k people had a subscription to the Billings Gazette. Today 23k do. That's a 58% drop in the number of people wanting to pay for the news. The numbers aren't pretty.
Billings Gazette 58% Loss of Subscribers (31,995 gone)
Helena Independent Record 30% Loss of Subscribers (4,352 gone)
Missoulian 57% Loss of Subscribers (21,623 gone)
Ravalli Republic 66% Loss of Subscribers (3,404 gone)
MT Standard 46% Loss of Subscribers (6,982 gone)
To be fair, the primary reason most reporters don't care about subscribers, despite the fact they are the 2nd biggest source of revenue traditionally, is because they think they all just started reading the newspaper online. While this is definitely part of the issue, I don't think it's anywhere near sufficient to describe the decline.
To put these numbers in BETTER perspective, realize that during the this time THOUSANDS more people moved into these areas. Here's the populations and changes of the counties these papers are in:
County 2000 Population 2020 Population Percent Change
Yellowstone 129,352 161,953 +25.2% (+32,601 people)
Lewis/Clark 55,716 70,402 +26.4% (+14,686 people)
Missoula 95,802 120,647 +25.9% (+24,845 people)
Ravalli 36,070 44,420 +23.1% (+8,350 people)
Silverbow 34,606 35,149 +1.6% (+543 people)
So, yeah. In the five counties where Lee has their largest newspapers, in the last 20 years they've lost a total of 68,355 print subscriptions while the counties they lived in added 81,025 new residents. Here's that number as subscribers/county population:
Town 2000 Marketshare 2020 Marketshare Percent Marketshare Loss 2000-2020
Billings 42.6% 14.3% -28.3%
Helena 26.1% 14.5% -11.6%
Missoula 39.5% 13.4% -26.1%
Ravalli 14.4% 4.0% -10.4%
Butte 44.2% 23.6% -20.5%
That's fucking nuts to me. 20 years ago FORTY percent of all people lived in a house in Missoula County that subscribed to the paper. Now it's less than 1 in 7. Almost FORTY FIVE percent of people in Butte got the paper delivered to their house in 2000. Now it's twenty percent.
A few things to note. I think the older Democrat populations of Helena and Butte have obviously staved off the hardest declines seen in other cities like Missoula. However, this doesn't mean they're not having problems. Helena still lost 5,000 subscribers and no business loses one-third of its customers and still considers it a good year just because the town over's store lost 22,000 customers.
So yeah. Let's give Gwen some more awards. If nothing else they've ruined their entire profession and almost entirely gave birth to right-wing media and Donald Trump's presidency.
Karma's a bitch I guess.
Honestly, Greg. I am beyond sick of this Election.
I won’t go into the particulars, but it’s something you can’t get away from.
I drive around town a lot. I see the homeless people sleeping downtown. I see the homeless people walking from East to West Broadway. I also drive up Rattlesnake to the nice areas. I see TONS of Democrat signs. One lady even made a 8’ x 12’ sign to explain to her neighbors why Senate voting is more important in Montana than California. That house did not have MT plates on their cars.
I wonder why you engage with Don Pogreba or anyone in the blogosphere. What’s the point?
This is what we are to them:
We are not people. We are not human beings with thought out positions or unique perspectives or experiences. We are dum dums to be controlled. We are idiots to be guided away from our idiocy into their all-knowing arms. And when we reject it, we’re every name in the book.
I ended a lifelong friendship last week. The older I get the more I am just starting to stand on principle rather than what seems good in the moment. A personal friend just started texting me out of the blue. He’d found a small note in Thomas’ dissent about the gay wedding cake case and KNEW for sure gay marriage and gay adoption would be overturned and his entire family would be ruined. And I was the problem of it. I was just too uninformed to know what to properly worry about. Why would I take it anymore? To this friend who I’ve helped through vacations, writing letters so he could adopt a child, aspects of his life going back to high school, I’m the bad guy. I’m the reason he must be scared.
One of the more popular books in Sociology is a book called “The Culture of Fear,” by Barry Glassner. The main thesis of the book is that human beings NEED to be worried. And when more and more things in their life are taken care of beyond reasonable worry, people FIND and even INVENT things to be worried about. I bring this up because this former friend lives in a reality 100% created by himself in which he KNOWS FOR CERTAIN if Trump wins his life will end.
Well, again I mean. He was also ONE HUNDRED percent certain if Trump won the same thing would happen in 2016. And… it didn’t. But why let something as minor as reality get in the way of a rich, white person with almost no problems going so crazy by constantly checking his phone and being “informed” being an asshole to a lifelong friend because of fear.
In Missoula, this is on full display. It’s how Gwen Florio thinks the pinnacle moment of her journalism career is not her failure to cover local government or education when it rapes and mistreats women, but resigning to let Missoula know she doesn’t like Republicans. As if anyone with more than 2 brains cells or more than 10 minutes READING THE MISSOULIAN didn’t already get the message.
See, Gwen moved her a long time ago. If you don’t know how long ago, let’s just say she got a nice house up the Rattlesnake for UNDER $80,000. It’s worth about a half million now. It’s why almost every single of the rich white transplants IMMEDIATELY buys a Subaru Outback. Because if you spend $50,000 on a car it’s justified cause they give $200 to an animal shelter.
Rich white liberals can AFFORD to be rich white liberals because at some point when you satisfy all of your basic material needs you start to need something to fill the void. And what better to fill the void than smugly prance around telling people about how good you are.
Although technically I’m now a millionaire, most of my life I’ve been dirt poor. I’m the first generation on my mom’s side not to shit in a hole in the backyard for the first 10 years of their life. My dad never graduated high school. We hunted and fish and cut down trees not because it was fun but because when you try to raise a family of 4 on $6/hr at the saw mill in Seeley you can’t afford to not kill animals to eat and cut down trees to heat your home when there’s 4 feet of snow outside your house for half the year.
I’ve been homeless twice. The second time was after I got my college degree and had to stop putting it on my resume here in Missoula because it got me LESS callbacks on jobs. I learned how to work on cars because the only cars I could afford for the first 20 years I had my license I could only afford piece of shit cars that constantly break down and we still live in a society that necessitates driving. I never learned how to manage money. I never went to a dentist growing up. So many small things that people take for granted, but are very clear indicators of class in our society.
Gwen Florio, Sherry Devlin, Keila Spalzer could all march down to city council and start shining light on the corruption if they wanted to. But they don’t want to. Why would they?
This is part of their identity. It’s how they see themselves in the world. They grew up in a society that has completely rejected traditional faith systems in favor of one that defines righteousness, charity and caring for others exclusively through public works and social media. How could they ever ask Engen about arresting so many blacks, that would be mean! How could they ever print even one kind word about ANY Republican, what would their friends say? Their identity is precisely formed around the lifestyle and benefits of being a rich white person.
Why the fuck would Gwen Florio care about affordable housing? She’s watched her house appreciate so much in value and personal wealth, why the fuck would she want housing prices to GO DOWN? Why the fuck would Gwen Florio even think anything bad is going on at City Hall or UM? Education was how she became so amazing and got everyone to listen to her. Education is how women are empowered! Why would she ever think to cut ONE DIME from UM when it is the beacon of social justice and fighting ignorance? Why the fuck would Gwen Florio care about a living wage? She moved her from Delaware like so many other rich white women and hasn’t really experienced a world with the same difficulties you and I know.
This is a class struggle, Greg. Why the fuck would my friend, or Gwen Florio, or Don Pogreba or anyone else who ties their entire identity around their political beliefs EVEN THINK anything else? They have an unending buffet of “news” telling them they’re right about everything. Telling them they’re so informed.
When I tried to write in Bozeman for the MSU newspaper the girl to shut me down was a transplant from Maryland. Nobody read the paper, but it’s mandatory students pay for it so they went through the motions. At the end of the year her parents took out a full page ad congratulating her on graduating with her Women’s Studies degree. “We just knew when she was little and gave a bag of chips to a homeless man, she was such a good person.”
This is their experience. Handouts are helping. And we already pay taxes, so why not wrap our charity into what we’re already gonna do anyway? We’re such good people!
They literally give up nothing and get all the reward. And when you’re insecure and white and have no real problems so you need to invent then, just putting another label like “poor” on people you already feel better than is a great way to both feel superior and appear virtuous.
My friend really wanted to lecture me about my white privilege. This guy grew up with both parents graduating college and getting good jobs. He also went to college (rich grandpa paid for everything, did I mention Steven and I paid $135,000 to get student loans off our backs?) and makes over $100,000 a year. His spouse doesn’t work. His adopted white kid does at least 3 extracurricular activities.
My dad was basically abandoned by his family and moved around homes from 13 onwards. My mom worked nights at the mill in Bonner while in high school, paid rent to her own parents for most of high school and got the fuck out as soon as she could. I had a job as soon as I was legally able and have basically worked 1-4 jobs and went to school for almost 20 years straight.
What privilege do I have? Is my poor white ass really more privileged than EVERY black person? Oprah? Barack Obama? This is where the theory fails in practice. Go tell middle America that the blacks burning down buildings and looting and shooting are doing it because of white Americans being so racist.
To be clear, I don’t even disagree with most of the gripes of social justice. I ALSO believe Blacks are treated poorly. I ALSO believe health care should be accessible. Blah blah blah. The difference I would actually like to solve the problem, and Democrats would prefer the problem exist forever so they can constantly feel superior.
Let’s just call it what it is. Racism. All ‘white privilege’ is in practice is white people admitting they are bad to look good to other white people. It inherently does nothing good for minorities and just continues to elevate rich WASPs above others. It’s why white women driving Subarus can literally bring a whole family from Africa here, get them jobs, get them in schools and build them a house. But my dad’s best friend who served 3 tours in Vietnam has to live in a camper in Seeley for the rest of his life on oxygen without his wife because she also couldn’t get medical treatment since their income married was too much. It’s why his son dies at 38 from alcoholism. It’s how my coworker at Town Pump gets divorced without his knowledge and just comes home to his wife and daughters gone.
It’s why both my nephews 16 and 19 are dropouts and now work for a living. It’s why my sister can abandon all her kids to go to meth on the reservation with another guy who abandoned his 6 kids and they can live without a care on government assistance and no worries about food, internet, housing or anything while my parents are kicked off public assistance for “lying” about raising their 3 grandchildren. It’s how many shitty fake parking tickets I’ve spent dealing with and how many times I’ve been “accidentally” signed up for Medicaid (FOUR TIMES) and had to deal with collections bills.
My point is they don’t give a shit how the government actually operates or what the tax rate is or who is affected by regulation or anything. It’s not their fucking problem.
LITERALLY THE ONLY THING THEY CARE ABOUT IS LOOKING LIKE THEY CARE. Because it’s the only thing they HAVE to deal with.
Affordable housing isn’t an urgent issue to them if they aren’t sleeping outside. Why solve the problem that makes them rich and all the extra income from new transplants constantly solves their budget gaps?
A living wage isn’t an urgent issue to them if they are trust fundies or government employees or already make $60,000 or more a year. Why pay low wagies more or give them healthcare if it’d make their latte cost even a dollar more?
I have many personal friends that are liberal. For some of them, I think it’s completely ruined their lives. My middle school best friend got a Theatre Degree from UM and is now 40 living with her parents with no job prospects. Another lifelong friend got a Psychology degree UM and is a secretary for a living. Another former friend I stopped talking to because of the constant lectures literally lives in a house with no running water, electricity or heat. He runs an extension cord from a neighbor so he can text me about the plight of minorities. (A white guy who moved here from California) A former friend got her English degree here and is also single and childless in her 40s and is a secretary at a veterinarian.
Someone is literally sitting in a cold, dark trailer in Arlee smelling like cat piss and the first thing you think to do is text someone about how they’re being not sensitive to the Muslim immigrant experience? A woman who’s NEVER had a relationship with a man, lives with her mom and dad while her siblings lead normal married lives with kids can still think to lecture me about climate change and feminism?
If I can't convince a grown man who smells like a litter box sitting in dark cold squalor he might be wrong about something, you think you're gonna convince a government babysitter who gets every night, weekend and summer off with full benefits of another point of view? Nah, bro...
THIS IS THEIR LIVES. They will never for a moment have enough self-awareness or use their supposed critical thinking skills about how their ideology has actually affected their lives. They have established such rigid, close-minded thought habits that every piece of information about the world is only filtered through the ideology. THEY GET TOO MUCH OUT OF IT. It's an integral part of validation of their self-worth. It's intimately personal.
I had to let go man. This was me in 2008. The ideology was “right wing.” And it had a profoundly disturbing effect on my mental health. When the only thing you believe is the ideology, you lose touch with reality. Whether it’s religion, faith, health crazes/diets, whatever. Once you lose the will to judge things objectively and only filter them through the belief system, how can you ever objectively judge reality again?
Why the fuck even think the words “Don Pogreba?” Why take the abuse? You aren’t going to change their minds. They’re minds are so locked up tight through layers of insecurity, self-negativity, self-righteousness and dopamine addiction. There is no world in which liberals who’ve drank the Kool-aid will ever treat you as anything more than a thing instead of a person. You are only what the ideology tells them, and the ideology tells them you are an ignorant, uninformed, misguided, racist, sexist blah blah blah. You think Christians run to the Church of Satan to consider their thoughts?
We’re playing a different game man. There is no common ground. They don’t really care if Black people are helped or if police get held accountable or if climate change is happening or anything. The only thing they care about is THEY ARE RIGHT and WE ARE WRONG.
So if you’re ALWAYS going to be wrong and ALWAYS be the bad person while they are the good, why talk to them at all? Why volunteer for the abuse? I don’t keep people who don’t treat me with dignity and respect in my life, so why keep a mentally ill addict around who just berates me? We gotta love ourselves more than that.
I think this pandemic really made some things clear. I’m rich but I’m still working Door Dash and Instacart because there’s just something inside me that can’t just be idle. But driving around, it’s also clear who can AFFORD to just take 2020 as a vacation and spend hours browsing news and give their OPINIONS on racism and government. It’s also clear who has to bust their ass for rent and food and gas and doesn’t have even the space mentally to deep dive on the nuances of Monica Tranel and Jennifer Fielder or threaten to cancel their newspaper subscription if they don’t like something in it.
That’s white privilege. That’s liberal privilege. Running our fucking country exclusively on the opinions of white women who are above the consequences of any of their feelings put in action and policy. Missoula Police aren’t arresting Karens driving Outbacks for weed. Who cares about the Griz players? No white ladies in Subarus in the Rattlesnake died under a bridge or disappeared. Why not vote for corrupt shitty white guys again?
Just more class warfare. They vote for things they are immune from giving a shit about and we all get to try to live in that world. Fun. Fun. Fun.
Man, the feelings of lady journalists have been flowing like WAP around here lately, Greg!
The Kaimin started publishing again. If you had to guess what the future of journalism decided was the FIRST thing they needed to write about, what would it be? PRIVILEGE, OF COURSE!
“We acknowledge our editorial board is white, and racial representation is key to accurate coverage.”
Erin, Sara, Claire, Mazana and Addie just couldn’t take their own whiteness and the very first thing they have to say as a group who will be expecting them to perform journalism since that’s what they chose to study is apologizing for their whiteness.
What do you think their second editorial covered? DEMANDING THE UNIVERSITY GUARANTEE THEIR SAFETY FROM COVID!!! “UM brought us back. Now it has to keep us safe!”
I was rewatching the Jordan Peterson discussion with Camille Paglia and one thing he said really struck me. “It’s like we’re now living in the fever dream of a 15-year old girl.”
Do you keep up with the Pathfinder in Seeley? A local controversy erupted when a lady reporter made a flippant comment about obscure, strange medical conditions. BUT THEN! A lady who had an obscure medical condition wrote in demanding action for the insensitivity of making light of a strange, obscure medical condition! So the lady reporter wrote a letter apologizing for making light of a strange, obscure medical condition!
When did our entire society and news become lady gossip? Can we really say we live in a patriarchy when almost all dialogue in society is through the paradigm of female social sensitivity with heavy consequences for non-compliance?
I am constantly fed entire news stories that have no basis at all to existing other than the reporter found at least one person with a fake profile and name on Twitter who said something “edgy” or had a reaction to some event or show. We know it’s just to make revenue via clickbait, but what does it say about society at large that have to actually WORK to find information on government in the newspaper but are constantly subjected to straight out gossip posing as information? When a Twitter account is so easy to create anonymously, can we even be sure they aren’t just making it up themselves?
The head of the Missoulian right now is Gwen Florio, who I used to have some real admiration for because of her coverage of the rampant problems with sexual assault, regular assault by Grizzly football players and discrimination. However, I’ll be honest, my opinion has changed. It started when I was interviewed by Keila Szpaller about my Green party candidacy. I brought up the fact that when two Grizzly football players assaulted another student and tried to cover it up, it was kept out of the Missoulian for over a month. It legit happened first home game of the year and the Missoulian didn’t write a word about it until Oct 24, 2009, AFTER it had become a viral national story.
Keila didn’t like this. She dressed me down and wanted to remind me that HER BOSS was Gwen Florio and she was the real SHEro of women everywhere!
But is she? When the assaults started coming to light and the Justice Department investigated UM and MPD, THEN they started their coverage. Gwen didn’t really write her pieces until UM and MPD were already under federal scrutiny.
For reference, Sherry Devlin was the editor at the time all this was occurring. She now spends her days on Twitter retweeting all the official accounts of national Democrats. I had a fondness for her since when I was in high school in Seeley Lake, I got to participate in the Midway Dispatch, a partnership where the Missoulian has journalists in training cover fair events for a full week. I made several friends I kept for the following years there. Kind of depressing to see so many “journalists” just becomes rigid, screaming ideologues.
But all this aside, what SHOULD a newspaper be doing? Shouldn’t it be regularly requesting copies of emails and schedules for public officials? Shouldn’t it be doing some auditing of its own of local government, including the University and the police? Shouldn’t the relationship be more adversarial than talking to PR lackeys and copy/pasting press releases from email?
The reason this matters is not only will the Missoulian refuse to do its job which could have exposed the sexual assaults and behavior of local officials in contributing to the problem, but it will actively HIDE things that are in the public knowledge. I remember living here in 2009 and wondering why the Kaimin would cover the disappearance and assaults of Grizzly football players, but not the Missoulian. But then, in opening the paper I saw Bobby Hauck smiling and reading books to children, courtesy of the Missoulian special reading program.
There exists a real problem when local journalists become so lazy and comfortable with government institutions that they not only refuse to cover them skeptically, but actively cover up their mistakes. I'm sure all these women identify as feminists, which makes it all the more angering they continue to cover for corporatists and local Democrats at the expense of actual rape and assault victims.
Gwen Florio is not a hero. Sherry Devlin is not a feminist. Keila Szpaller is not a journalist.
They are lady propagandists who can’t see past their own self-righteous noses to see the power they wield could bring about some real good in the world.
But who has time to save women from being raped, cops and students from being assaulted by Grizzly football players and our government being transparent when there is crying and advocacy to do!
Partisan Monkey Business reads the Headline! Evil Trump and Post Office trying to steal the election!! (sorry but I'm not paying them $17 just to get a better resolution image)
Our experiences with the Chronicle probably differ, Greg, but I must tell you they are some of the most rabid partisans in the state, and are proud to wear that label.
This is an entire article about how evil voter suppression is happening in Bozeman! Don't you know all the post office boxes are being taken from DEMOCRATIC neighborhoods?!?!
This is all great and dandy, until you learn more than 30 seconds of information about the situation. The reality is almost every single one of the post office boxes being removed is 5 blocks or less than either an actual Post Office, or the Elections office itself. I'll show you.
I've marked on this map the location of all the boxes that were removed. I've also circled in red the locations of the Elections office of Gallatin County and the Main Downtown Post Office. So for reference:
Box #1: On Main Street ONE block North of Post Office.
Box #2: Directly in front of Court House/Elections Office
Box #3: 2 blocks from Court House/Elections Office & 5 blocks from Post Office
Box #4: 3 blocks from Post Office
They also list the box in front of Culbertson Hall in Bozeman. If you're not familiar Culbertson Hall is the satellite office of the Post Office. I've had rented boxes there. I'm not exactly sure how taking a box away from in front of an office with staff, a window and drop off is suppression, but MONKEY BUSINESS!
And of course their favorite media whore is there for a quote! It smells fishy to me says Parker, a personal friend of Jon Tester. His wife literally was a donor and volunteer on his campaign, but he still maintains he's an objective moderate, who's households funds Tester's campaigns...
Several years ago Forward Montana had a hissy fit when the county decided to move the polling place that was formerly located on campus to a neutral site about a mile away. The Elections office couldn't hold a polling place there because it was the football stadium and you had to get up 3 stories to the voting. This was unfortunately not handicap accessible, but Forward Montana didn't care because their sole reason for existing is to help Democrats win elections. They also didn't seem to care that some people in the rural parts of the county like Sedan or West Yellowstone had to travel 30-90 miles to vote. No, for a liberal having to walk an extra block is monkey business and voter suppression.
One last thing. If you literally put your ballot in the box in front of the Courthouse instead of just walking it to the 2nd floor and handing it to the Election worker, your ballot would probably take 2-3 days to get to them since all mail in the state is now forwarded through Billings. So the Chronicle is literally complaining that a method of voting that would delay your ballot by 2-3 days and possibly make it not get counted is taken away, but is too lazy to even show a map showing how close all of these boxes were to other Post Office drops or Election offices. No agenda here, ok!!!
People say gays are trying to recruit children. I don't know why.
You say we're sexualizing children? Homophobe!
Sounds like you're being closed-minded again, Greg.
You're just not enlightened like rich white people.
You going to raise closed-minded kids, now?
Look at me I don't want my kids collecting money in bars cause I'm a homophobe.
What's the problem with adult nudity around kids?
Didn't take your kids to the march? Not woke.
Not gonna put your kid on hormones by 3rd grade? Transphobe!
Don't want your kids around sex? Prude.
Fucking closed minded bigot.
The reason for more trans kids is totally organic and has nothing to do with what their school teaches them, homophobe.
Give us your kids or we'll take them, transphobe.
Dads standing up for their kids is just more toxic masculinity.
What bigot doesn't want 5 year olds learning S&M?
No parents allowed, ok?
U mad, bro?
Don't call it grooming, it's clearly innocent.
Gender is a societal construct. Tear it down, man.
You act like white women would celebrate Mother's Day by dressing their kids up in fashion shows with drag queens. Hater!
You act like it's gotten so bad even gay people are getting sick of it.
Lemme ask you a question, Greg. If you had to pick a woman or philosophy that you’d want to instill in young women to help them lead happy, productive and meaningful lives, what would it be? Christianity? Islam? Feminism? Marxism? How about man-hating 3rd wave feminism?
When I lived in Bozeman I was either enrolled in or directly involved in academia for about 15 years total. The head of the Women’s Center there and the big advocate for LGBT causes was a lesbian. The head of the women’s studies program there was also a very butch lesbian. These women and dozens more like them who hold positions of power in academia have a few things in common.
One, a large percentage of them are outright hostile to men and have wholesale rejected the experiences of average women. They see marriage as an arcane institution solely created for the control and persecution of women. They see children as a burden to be avoided at all costs, even advocating outright murder before they are born, especially if you think it might be any less than perfect or include male genitals. They openly bash men and are rewarded and patted on the back for it. Their relationships with men are almost all toxic, their friend groups consistent mostly of other women and beta males, and they condescend to men in most of their lives if they haven’t gotten rid of their inclusion completely already.
Academia has morphed into more of a belief system of indoctrination where they become “woke” and suddenly get the vision to see things average people are unaware of, including the patriarchy and inherent evilness of men and righteousness of women. In many ways it’s just another version of “better than you,” which has always been a nasty feature of academics.
Is this who we want our daughters to be? And yet they are all our sons and daughters experience anymore as the ideology of social justice infects more of education and society at large.
As I get older and do more self-reflection I think I can confidently say that I was mostly raised as a girl. And yet, I can’t even say my experience was unique. Almost every single one of my teachers until high school was a woman. Since collegiate accreditation is required now for most educational positions, we end up exporting the madness of college women’ studies courses to every level of our public education system, including children as young as 5. The reality is, almost all boys are raised as girls now, and if they try to resist, we put them on psychoactive drugs. If we don’t put them on psychoactive drugs, you can be reported for child abuse. Public education is now a system of instilling conformity in lieu of actual impartment of useful life skills.
One of the interesting things is that as science has progressed, the conservative position on many issues has been proven to be unequivocally true. While leftists claims that women and men are completely the same except for some stuck on genitals, the lower cost of brain scans now proves beyond a doubt with tens of thousands of points of data that men and women have differently formed brains. Men generally have larger brains than women, but the areas that we know are most responsible for social bonding is larger in women and areas related to spatial and physical objects and aggression are larger in men. So why, exactly is this data completely the opposite of what is being taught at every university and school in America?
I think one of the reasons that big government has been so successful in taking the place of normal family and social roles is that it aligns closely with what women naturally are good at doing. When I worked at 9-1-1 the staff was overwhelmingly female while the actual police officers were overwhelmingly male. Women are just naturally better at communication, holding several things in short term memory, and often with the calming, nurturing demeanor it takes to deal with constant crisis of people calling with emergencies. The men, on the other hand, actually ran head-first into dangerous situations and were the ones doing the “heavy lifting” of personal interaction while the women sat in comfy chairs in the basement with large screens and numerous snacks surrounding them.
Considering how closely the integration of women into the workforce has aligned with feminism, it’s interesting to see what they accomplished. Most hardcore feminists look at the roles of women as homemakers, caretakers of children, food preparers etc and consider it “lesser” work, which is also one of the main selling points feminists hit hard when shaming other women, as if raising an adult human being to be a self-sufficient productive member of society is the worst of all responsibilities in this world. They seem to never question whether or not career is the real ultimate source of satisfaction in one’s lives.
What do women who go to college actually do? While some definitely go on to do great things in many fields, in my personal experience, a large portion just become secretaries. What do all the women in local government do but sit behind desks at computers all day? When I finally left MSU I had to have an exit interview and when I told the women I was going to grad school, she lowered her voice and said, “That sounds great, but I’ll just warn you this entire office is full of women with graduate degrees making $15 an hour.” In fact, that was most of the university administration, which accounts for about 2/3rds of college costs including mandatory student fees.
One of the largest drivers of college costs has been the amount of periphery staff that is now required, and most of those positions seem to be filled by women. In fact, most of the liberals I know who graduated faced the same predicament I did when I graduated with a Sociology degree. Once you realize doing book reports for 4 years gave you no real world skills, you find the safe space, which is usually taking a low-level desk job shuffling papers at some corner of the university. Whether it was the gender studies degree girl or the political science major or the liberal studies major, they all ended up shuffling papers for low pay but good benefits. It usually takes them about 3-5 years before they become bored and leave so another gender studies graduate can take their place.
So we convince women that they shouldn’t ruin their life with a husband and a kid so they just take on stupid amounts of debt and spend the next 40 years of their lives working it off alone doing almost nothing meaningful while their uteruses dry up and they satisfy their feminine nature through other means.
I noticed that between my Statistics courses I took incidentally in 2004-2006 and coming back to campus in 2011 there was a big change. The Statistics department that formerly housed mostly men in their 50s-60s and 70s was almost now made up of homely middle-aged women who treated most people in their classes like kindergarteners. Whereas I would formerly walk into a 400 level Stats class and be hit with theory and formulas, the new Stats mommies passed out bags with beads in them so we could learn counting easier. One of the most liberal professors I had regularly hit on her 19-22 year old male students. My guess is she never got much positive male attention when younger, so after her two divorces, 3 kids by different men and live-in boyfriend, she still somehow needed some male validation. When you have young attractive males who can’t move on in their programs until you give them a good grade, you definitely have some power to wield.
When my older male advisor quit he was replaced by a 30ish woman. The only real skills they seem to have is nod at you with a blank look and say things like, “That must be hard,” or “I understand you’re feeling frustrated.” I’ve become quite sick and hostile to it as I’ve seen it invade more and more of everyday life. You can’t go into any office government or private anymore and not get this treatment. I really believe we’ve convinced women to give up loving, deep relationships with men and children to instead put meaning into their little cubicle fiefdoms and smart phones.
Lemme throw a couple of statistics at you. According to Pew Research, from 1997 to 2012 the number of women aged 18 to 34 who said a successful marriage is one of the most important things in life rose from 28 to 37 percent. Meanwhile during the same period the number of men who said this declined from 35 to 29 percent. In 1960, 75 percent of people over 18 were married and that has dropped to half. Among never married adults aged 30 to 59, men are three times more likely to say they don’t ever want to get married. Despite women entering the work force, attitudes of desirability of marriage among women have increased while they’ve drastically dropped for men.
Second, most women want a man of equal or high status to marry while most men are fine marrying at or below their income or status. What this means is now you have produced an imbalance in the dating pool. More and more women are doing everything on their own since they can’t find suitable mates to match their new educational and professional goals, and government social programs eliminate the need to keep a partner. Why deal with a stinky, grump man when you can just get money direct deposited, right? Catering all education to women while eliminating traditional middle-class jobs for men like extraction and manufacturing begs the question, what exactly are they supposed to do?
While I’m 100% in favor of allowing women to pursue whatever they want in life, the fact is we’re indoctrinating young women into thinking that a professional career is the only acceptable option and if you desire children, you get someone else to take care of them. Conversely, you’re trying to eliminate all masculinity from society since you view it as “toxic” and the only acceptable reaction to public education for boys becomes falling behind, being put on drugs or conforming to making yourself feminine. And then we wonder why they become losers in basements, drug addicts, school shooters or depressed transsexuals.
Feminism is not helping women. It’s alienating them from the opposite sex while making them slaves to corporate and government bureaucracies. It’s teaching them nameless, faceless cold sanitized day cares love their babies more than they can, leading to dumping kids in daycares and on Ipads or even just murdering them before they’re born. It’s creating a myriad of societal problems by demonizing men and treating them inhumanely. Then regular people get to live with the results while most who advocate for it keep themselves both physically, mentally and politically apart from those they want to control so they can maintain judgment while dealing with none of the negative results.
It’s very sad to me. I see it in close friends who insist their jobs doing menial work remain front and center while corporately controlled government raises their children. I see it in male friends who’ve largely checked out of society since they 100% belief a meaningful relationship with a woman is impossible and fill the void with food, video games, weed etc. to numb their existences as barely surviving retail workers. I see it in the women who slowly watch their health, looks and minds go while they buy into the rat race. Once they hit 30s/40s and realize their chances of having a family are gone they throw more of their maternal instincts into their jobs, creating these fat, stringy-haired nasty desk mommies.
If there is a better way to destroy the nuclear family, turn men and women against each other and themselves, sterilize and sanitize the raising of children into good little worker drones and generally demoralize a society to the point of learned helplessness, I haven’t seen it yet.
Tom Brokaw and others have called the generation of Americans that fought and won World War 2 the “Greatest Generation.” And sprung forth from their loins is a huge demographic we can call the “Worst Generation.” Baby Boomers outnumber all other age groups in America by 3 to 1, partially because of their parents coming home from war but also because of the wide availability of birth control that came about in the 60s. When the average Baby Boomer came of voting age in America the national debt was somewhere between $600 and $800 million. When Social Security was created during their early years there were 18 people paying into the system for every 1 person collecting a check. Now that they’re collecting our national debt is over $27 trillion, rising fast and only 3 people are paying into the system for each person collecting.
Most generations typically want their children and grand children to do better so they don’t have to work as hard as their parents and grandparents. Baby Boomers might be the opposite. During their work years they expanded the government and its spending by literally trillions of dollars, created millions of government regulations for future generations to try and sift through, and somehow went from being drafted into Vietnam to continuing forever wars in foreign lands, allowing spying on Americans in almost every facet of their lives, and seem to have zero problem with the current society’s sexualization of children and complete lack of any coherent social structure. As Boomers enter their twilight years they will continue their drain on our future with more debt spending via Social Security, Medicare, social programs etc. and we will get to live like Japan since we continue to put everything on 20 year notes that will outlive the people who voted for them.
Look at the Missoulian. You have Gwen Florio pushing 70. George Ochenski is in his 70s, so old the Missoulian can’t find a color photo of him to run with his columns. Bob Brown is in his 70s. George Will is 79 and was run until last year. Gary and Joan Carlson are in their 70s. Evan Barrett is in his 70s and Don “K” is almost 70. No matter who wins the presidential race it will be a white guy in his 70s, the oldest in history. Amazing that in the 80s Reagan was constantly called senile and hit on his age and Democrats will be putting a 78-year-old in office if Biden wins.
Montana is the oldest average state in the West. The combination of an aging population and a lack of influx of any younger people, including immigrants has made this state an aging old monolith. You can feel it if you go anywhere in town. My main job most days is driving around town either shopping for old peoples’ groceries or bringing them their groceries from Walmart. I spend hours a day in my car in town and its one of the slowest, grinding, most frustrating things. It is a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Old people get giant rigs they can’t drive well because it makes them feel safer, yet they feel mostly unsafe because they drive huge rigs that they can’t drive or park well because of their size. If you’re not familiar check out Costco some day. It is not a coincidence that the opening salvos of the Senate race this year were about hospital funding and medical spending. In 2014 I had to listen to Ryan Zinke say “Social Security is a promise” about 200 times and it wasn’t because he didn’t know who was going to be determining if he won or not. The biggest demographic in this state is old and wants they free healthcare!
In some ways these protests are of the Baby Boomers’ doing. You can’t let people who envision the destruction of the planet on a daily basis raise, teach and feed your kids and then NOT explain to them how all of the horrible problems facing the planet have not been dealt with yet. Most of the major Civil Rights legislation was actually passed in the 60s, so why do we still have all these racial problems? 30 years ago, Boomers like Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, George HW Bush, and others came together in a bipartisan way to butcher American manufacturing through NAFTA and subsequent trade deals and decisions, gutting the middle class. In 1965 Democrats completely overhauled the immigration system into the mess we see today so they could spend 2 generations importing new voters from the 3rd world. Montana lost their 2nd Congressional seat in 1990 along with many Northern states as states closer to Mexico or those with super liberal immigration policies like New York grew and grew. The list of things the Boomers brought to our current world is long and vast. They had the power to make changes for almost two generations now and we’re all getting to see the results of that their action and inaction.
Who cares about Affordable housing when boomers need their 2nd homes for summer/winter? Who cares about the coming debt or currency crises when boomers need their 2nd or 3rd helpings of government care? Who cares about reading, writing and arithmetic when we can teach them about climate change, racism and feed them garbage from the junk food corporations who control the FDA and what goes into our kids’ food? While there are obviously systemic problems that continue to get worse, Boomers had the chance to either solve these problems and follow them through to their solutions, or continue kicking the can down the road and letting their backbones turn to jelly while sucking hard on the teat of future generations via government transfers and policies.
I remember being a small child on one of our many Seeley Lake outdoor fields trips and being told to always leave a place in the same or better condition than what you found it. Apparently Baby Boomers never learned that lesson since the decline of America can be laid in many ways right at their feet. The saddest thing is they won’t be around to bear the consequences of their greedy and poor decisions. That cost will be born by you and I and our children and our children’s children, if not every American when this country becomes just a page in a history book from the Boomers’ lifetime of mismanagement and greed of the gifts they were given. Sad.
Edit: Since writing this I found not one but two recent books detailing what they term "generational theft" by Boomers from future generations. Here's a few of the hits from these articles:
~While the oldest millennial is now 40 years old, Filipovic notes that this generation remains underrepresented in our government. “Nearly 80 percent of senators and two-thirds of the US House of Representatives are 55 or older. Just 7 percent of representatives in Congress are millennials. There is not a single millennial in the US Senate."
~“Millennials make up close to a quarter of the US population, but hold just 3 percent of the wealth,” she writes. “When boomers were our age, they held 21 percent.”
One cause of this is the cost of higher education: Millennials face private education costs 300 percent higher than boomers did, and around 1 in 10 millennials carries student loan debt in the six-figure range. By comparison, she writes that “when the average boomer was a young thirty-something, their educational debts amounted to just $2,300 in today’s dollars.”
~She notes that Ronald Reagan, “the first boomer-elected president,” helped cause this crisis by slashing the Higher Education Act, which had made it easier for students to qualify for and receive need-based aid. As a result, most students became dependent on loans — and this, combined with greater tuition costs, helped spur the financial crisis they’re in today. “Boomer households today are worth 12 times as much as millennial ones,” Filipovic writes. “The average millennial is worth just $8,000 — less than adults of any generation in three decades.”
~“Boomers were the last generation to enter a job market offering living-wage blue-collar work. In Rust Belt towns, even in the mid-1960s, you could graduate high school straight into a factory job that would keep a nuclear family afloat,” Filipovic writes, citing the nationwide closures of factories and mines, the source of “America’s last well-paying blue-collar jobs,” as one cause for these job losses.
As a result, millennial earnings have plunged compared to previous generations. Adjusted to 2016 dollars, boomer households led by a male breadwinner averaged $56,100 in annual income in 1978, while comparable millennial households, at the same age, made just $49,500 in 2014. Overall, boomer households in this demographic were just $10,000 behind the national average, while millennial households in the same cohort were closer to $25,000 behind the average.
The 2008 recession further compounded the problem. “The shock of unemployment translated into a 7 percent loss of earnings for baby boomers. Millennials lost nearly double that amount,” she writes. “And boomers saw significant recovery afterward. By 2010, their losses had already shrunk by 65 percent. Millennials didn’t see a comparable bounce back … [due to] limited employment histories, little to no savings, and a vanishing social safety net.”
~On top of all this, millennials also lack the wealth-building benefits boomers came to expect, especially since companies began slashing employee perks after the 2008 recession. A Pew Research Center analysis found that “while nearly 70 percent of working boomers had access to employer-sponsored retirement plans in 2012, more than 40 percent of working millennials aren’t eligible to participate in retirement plans — because their company doesn’t offer one, because they work too few hours to qualify, or because they haven’t been employed long enough.”
~At the same time, owning a home has become increasingly out of reach for most millennials. “The cost to build homes has increased so much since the [2008 financial] crisis, it’s more difficult for millennials to find affordable homes,” Jung Hyun Choi, a research associate with the Housing Finance Policy Center at the Urban Institute, says in the book. As builders began focusing on more expensive projects, there were “simply fewer affordable starter homes to go around, making all of them more expensive,” Filipovic writes.
When coupled with deflated incomes, fledgling millennial homeowners have paid “almost 40 percent more for their first homes than boomers did.” Rents, too, have climbed: “In 1970, the median monthly rent in the United States was a little more than $600 a month, in 2019 dollars,” Filipovic writes. “By 2019, it had doubled, to more than $1,300 a month.” When boomers were 34 years old, close to half of them owned homes, according to Filipovic, but for millennials at the same age, that figure is only 37 percent.
How shitty is Mayor John Engen?
If you haven’t read his letter to constituents regarding the protests on the lawn of the courthouse, click here.
Can you believe this guy was a newspaper columnist and journalist before being the mayor? He won’t even capitalize “Black” but he’ll capitalize Jewish and Semitic. Also Indigenous, etc. I thought it was proper to capitalize all racial and ethnic groups as proper nouns but *shrug* what do I know?
He even goes so far as to shit on Trump. On official City of Missoula letterhead.
I think the biggest problem for me is his (and Bullock’s) ability to take responsibility and non-responsibility at the same time. This guy has been mayor for 14 years. Let’s look at a few things he had the willpower to actually change and those he still hasn’t.
In 2006, the same year Engen took office Missoula County voters expressed their displeasure with police time and resources going to marijuana arrests and wanted to make them a low level priority. As is the reality, most people see these low level crime enforcement efforts as harassment that helps put people into the system who otherwise would never become a part of it. What happened under new Mayor Engen? Marijuana arrests went UP. Missoula police actively told the public, who pays their salaries and benefits, fuck off we’ll arrest MORE people if you care so much about it.
Fred VanValkenburg, former Democratic legislator and then County Attorney specifically took steps to override the citizen Initiative. It might be noted at the same time Van Valkenburg was so obsessed with fighting the will of the people he took an oath to serve, he wasn’t so concerned about women. The 18-month period that the Justice Department report found 350 women whose rapes, assaults and discrimination were ignored by Missoula Police was in 2010-2011 while VanValkenburg was appealing to Republicans and the legislature to keep arresting low-level drug crimes. This matters since it's the primary way many low-income and minority people interact with police, through this fishing expedition type of "enforcement."
Where was Engen? What was he fighting then? I worked closely on these early marijuana legalization campaigns and John Masterson was a friend who became so completely exhausted by single-handedly fighting city hall that he eventually gave up and just moved out of state. Was Mayor Engen mad enough back then or still just taking the police union dues to keep funding his next campaign? On his watch the ACLU now puts Blacks as 9.6 more times likely than whites to be arrested for low-level offenses. Good job, John!
Surely if Engen wanted something changed he could get it done. What happened when he saw himself face to face with his own mortality and realized he would never want to foot the $40,000 bill for his own fat surgery? Well just lobby the insurance company to make a change so that the taxpayers can pay for it! Engen the newspaper journalist with always something to say suddenly says “No Comment.” And then when he comes back at the end of the year he’s writing pretty letters again letting everyone know the fat surgery operation in lieu of any self-control went well and he was fine! He was practically bragging about the fact that he only had to pay $3,000 for it.
What has happened on Mayor Engen’s watch? The city became the “Rape Capital” of America. We’re now to about 50 or so homeless dead on our streets every year. An additional 50 or so Indigenous or Native women just seem to disappear from our streets in the same year. We’ve seen the demolition of historical buildings and charities like Boys and Girls Club go bankrupt while donors to Engen’s campaigns get sweetheart loans to build more high rises. Taxes continue to rise and price regular people out of the housing market, while we get to pay for more mid-level administrators to continue their “study” of the issue for 20 or so years now.
I’ll leave you with one of Engen’s more egregious out-of-touch examples, when he was interviewed by the BBC about the epidemic of male suicide in the West. I won’t rant yet about how everything to do with men’s problems seem to involve women’s stories, but John lets us know what he thinks would be one of the causes, white men who get Muslim women bosses! Just listen… (fast forward to 12:22 since YT won't let me link)
